Pickering is well known as the southern terminus of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, an 18-mile steam railway running through the spectacular scenery of the North York Moors. It is reputed to be one of the oldest towns in the area dating back to 270BC when founded by Peredurus - King of the Brigantes. The historic market town of Pickering (formerly known as Piceringas and Pykering) is situated between York and Scarborough. Providing the official gateway to the beautiful North York Moors National Park. Also known to many as the North Yorkshire Moors. The skyline of Pickering is dominated by the magnificent spire of the Church of St Peter and St Paul of Pickering, which contains some remarkable 15th century murals. The town draws a large number of visitors (mostly during the summer months), many are day trippers visiting the North Yorkshire Moors Steam Railway (the longest steam railway in England).

Pickering CastleWhilst hidden high above the town, the ruins of Pickering Castle harbour a rich royal history. The well preserved castle reveals much about the nature of Royal power in the Middle Ages. Kings of England used the castle as a hunting lodge and enjoyed their new sport in the extensive forests which then surrounded the town. Military action brought about its ruin almost by accident. The Royalists stripped the lead from its roof to make shot for their guns whilst they were defending Scarborough, and local landowners dismantled many of the walls for their stone. Today, the castle is in the hands of English Heritage. It is a classic and wellpreserved example of an early earthwork castle refortified in stone during the 13th and 14th centuries, centred upon a shellkeep crowning an impressive motte. There is an exhibition in the chapel, and family-friendly books and activities.

There is evidence of Human existence in Pickering since prehistoric times. During the last Ice Age, the Vale Of Pickering was a glacial lake. There is a vast amount of history involving Pickering and the surrounding areas including: Roman occupation, Royal Decrees and famous battles with the Scots.
